Paul Crick and Dayanne Almeida have joined the ARDG group in 2021 after purchasing Ross and Gilly Alexander’s Makino flock, now called Arahura.
Paul and Dayanne are leasing Glenside, an 850ha sheep, beef and deer farm 20min South of Masterton in the Wairarapa.
Paul has an extensive 30-year background in agriculture and education both nationally and overseas; from working and managing large-scale properties in New Zealand’s North and South Islands to farm consultancy in Chile and Brazil along with developing the next generation of NZ farmers in his previous executive role of Director of Farms for Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre. Paul oversaw the Taratahi sheep, beef, deer and dairy properties, each managed individually, carrying 37,000 sheep, 1500 cattle, 700 deer and 1500 dairy cows over 5700ha. Paul has been involved in various agricultural and social research projects in conjunction with Massey University, AbacusBio, Alliance Group, Beef + Lamb Genetics, AgResearch and is currently operating the Beef + Lamb Genetics Hill Country Central Progeny Test flock on their property. Paul is also the chairman of Beef + Lamb New Zealand National Farmer Council.
Dayanne is originally from Brazil where she studied Animal Science before immigrating to NZ in 2009. Since then she has been extensively involved in ram breeding, having worked previously for Wairere Rams as Research and Development Manager while completing her master’s degree in sheep genetics and breeding through Massey University. Dayanne is currently Zoetis Genetics Sheep Technical Lead helping commercial and stud farmers achieve their breeding goals. She is also mom of 4 year-old Isabella and is working alongside Paul on their lease farm assisting with performance recording and analysis of their commercial ewe flock as well as BLNZ Hill Central Progeny Test flock.

- Glenside and Arahura lease farms with a total 850ha effective.
- Located in the Gladstone area – traditionally summer dry and winter wet, 900 to 1000mm annual rainfall.
- Commercial ewe flock focused on key maternal traits including reproduction, growth and ewe body condition.
- All hoggets mated annually, only the in-lamb ones are retained.
- Wintering:
- 3800 MA and 2th ewes (includes the BLG CPT and ARDG ewes).
- 1100 ewe hoggets (includes the BLG CPT and ARDG hoggets)
- 140 MA cows
- 130 R1 cattle
- 700 red deer
- 2020: MA lambing 160%, 2ths 143% and hogget's 97%, weaning weight 31kg average.
- All commercial ewes are EID tagged, individually assessed and SIL selected for performance.
ARDG Arahura breeding focus:
- To continue the outstanding work carried out by the ARDG group now represented in the Wairarapa.
- To continue recording for facial eczema and worm resistance/resilience. Maintain FEC and FE Gold flock statuses.
- To incorporate the stud ewes into our farm system: no special treatment, multi-sire mating, progeny DNA pedigree recorded, unassisted lambing.
- To add meat goal trait to our selection criteria by eye muscle scanning all ram and ewe hogget's at 6 months of age.
- To select heavily on soundness and structure.
- To continue full flock genomics by Sheep5K™ testing all lambs born and Sheep50K™ testing all sires used for accurate pedigree information and genomically enhanced breeding value
